Pomegranate

Common name:Pomegranate
Botanical name:Punica granatum

A dense growing tree, the Pomegranate produces showy, orange-red flowers in spring, followed by 2" diameter edible red berries. Its apple-green leaves are about 1" long and .5" wide, glossy, and deciduous. It can be trimmed to a shrub size. It reaches 3'-10' tall. It prefers full to part sun. It needs occasional deep watering once it's established. Overwatering promotes fungal problems.

Black-Eyed Stella Daylily

Common name:Black-Eyed Stella Daylily
Botanical name:Hemerocallis 'Black-Eyed Stella'

This beauitful perennial reaches about 2' tall, with long strappy grass-like foliage most of year. Trumpet shaped flowers bloom in spring and summer, lasting only 1 day. Flowers are pale yellow with an intense orange eye zone. Cut foliage in fall to refresh. Will bloom more if soil is amended with compost and mulched to retain moisture. Plant in full sun. It needs medium amount of watering and extra during hot summer months.

Coast Redwood, Redwood

Common name:Coast Redwood, Redwood
Botanical name:Sequoia sempervirens

This fast-growing, aromatic tree has soft, dark green foliage with long needles appearing in flat sprays and brown, barrel-shaped cones that appear after 1 year. Its soft, red-brown bark is fiberous and furrowed. Particularly after mechanical damage, this tree will stump sprout to form new, young trees around the stump. Avoid planting in areas of high foot traffic. Inadequate moisture or a hot, dry site will inhibit its growth.

Soils and Compost:

Incorporate compost 6" into your soil to retain water, reduce compaction, feed earthworms, and provide valuable nutrients to your plants.

Water Saving Tip:

Check your irrigation controller once a month, and adjust as necessary.

Most plants require only one-third as much water in winter as they do in summer.

Integrated Pest Management:

Attract, or buy beneficial insects such as ladybugs and lacewings to control pest outbreaks in your garden.
